At one point in my life I had health coverage.  I started experiencing great pain in my abdominal area, my husband rush me to Cedars Sinai Hospital where I learned I was suffering from an Etopic Pregnancy which is extremely painful and can rupture and kill you in a moments notice.  I received great care and was admitted to the hospital immediately and released two days later with instructions, pain medication, and an appointment to follow up in a few days.  Exactly 6 months later it happen to me again.  I started experiencing the same pains and recognized them right away and my husband took me back to Cedars Sinai Hospital however at this time I was no longer insured and immediately I received the complete opposite care.  I waited in the hallway and was given no relief medication.  I was later told that I would receive the same shot I had received before but this time I would be sent home.  Although I was a little confused what could I say.  When it came time for me to be released all I was given was a release form.  No pain medication, No follow up appointment, and No nothing.  At that time I refused to leave the hospital until I received a prescription for pain medication.  I was told this was coming from the head Physician in charge, so I asked to see him personally and was told he was in a meeting.  I was almost dressed and ready to leave so I told the nurse I would wait and took my clothes off and climbed right back in the bed.  This went on for about 45 minutes of them trying to release me without meds.  Then they came in with a two 2-packs of Vicodin.  I asked them was this a joke because by morning these would be gone and then what?  Well two days later, the shot they claimed they had given me never worked because my Eptopic Tubal ruptured and this was the worse pain I had ever experienced before in my life.  I curled up in a ball and cried for dear life while my kids watched over me.  I was rushed to MLK Hospital where I received much better care than Cedars Sinai ever tried to give me.  I had emergency surgery right away to save my life.  To this day I do not believe I was ever given the shot to rid me of my Eptopic Pregnancy because for some strange reason it work the first time with no complications but the second time it did not work.  And I believe they did not want to give me the Vicodin because they knew I would be experiencing more pain than any vicodin could ever help me with.  Although I am now fully insured and have been for over 10 years, this has always bothered me that Cedars Sinai brushed me off and was willing to send me home to die because I was not insured.

did you know?
Health care providers inflate costs to compensate for caring for the uninsured. Providers do not have unlimited pockets to secretly finance the health care provided to millions of uninsured (and underinsured) patients. Hospitals and physicians anticipate the fact that the uninsured will seek care each year. They prepare for this reality by setting prices for the insured that are higher than expected costs.
