We are a family of six. My husband and I have four beautiful daughters whom I home school. We also own our own small window covering business. My husband is a type 1 diabetic and has been since the age of 9. Our oldest daughter at the tender age of 22 months was also diagnosed with being a brittle type 1 diabetic, due to seizures which have been brought on with her very sudden low blood sugars. She is now 15. (This is the main reason why I home school. No school can properly or even want the burden of taking care of a sick child, especially in junior high or high school. I can understand this.)
Our daughter thankfully receives SSI and medical coverage. We are blessed for this. However, my husband cannot qualify unless we pay an astronomical amount to have him insured. We cannot afford to do this. We have no employees but each other and once in awhile we hire the kids as part of their curriculum.
Now being a diabetic for almost 39 years, the effects of this horrible disease is starting to show and affect his health in tragic ways. Because he is on his feet for a good portion of the day, his feet are black, blue and purple by the time he gets home and usually have no sensation. His left eye is partially blind due to hemorrhaging. His hands and legs are constantly numb and tingle. There are days he cannot even get up to go to work, and because of the fact we have no health care, all I can do for him is to try to home remedy him and try to subdue his pain. Now please, I’m not being a cry baby, or trying to sound so pathetically as so everyone should feel sorry for us, we just would like resources or access to health care that we can afford.
As we speak, we owe the IRS about $8,000 for state taxes from our business, (which we save for every quarter, however it ends up getting spent for my husbands insulin and other diabetic supplies that he has to have.) I have no idea what to do. I feel so helpless.
